Living a Roly-Poly Life

As I was thinking and praying about what to write for this week's Weekly Thought, the strangest thing kept coming to my mind: to write about a "roly-poly." You know what I am talking about, those little bugs that you find outside or sometimes in your house that look like a small pill and roll up into a tiny ball when frightened.

Interestingly enough, these bugs are called Amadillidium vulgare, pill-bugs, potato bugs, or even doodlebugs by people.

You might be wondering what is so great about this little creation of God and how I can write a weekly Christian devotional with this theme. Well, here goes!

These little bugs are God's creation and do have a purpose on this earth. They feed on decaying plants, algae, and lichens, which means they help clean the earth. They are found worldwide and can adapt to many environments. Amazingly, some people keep them as pets, especially children, and they are harmless to humans.

As with all of God's creation, they have a defense mechanism: they roll up into a perfect little ball when disturbed and can roll smoothly on various surfaces.

How well are you "roly-polying" through life?

My little Ellie has been taking gymnastic classes, and one of the first things she has learned is to do the roly-poly to somersault. When she does not curl up into a perfect little ball, she rolls over sideways, hits her tailbone, and she can even get stuck. However, when she tightens up and forms this roly-poly position, she can roll and roll almost effortlessly in a straight line and without injury.

If you take this concept and apply it to your own life, think about how well you are rolling through life versus bouncing around, going sideways, or even getting hurt.

"Rolling" well through life is not tucking into a ball like my Ellie, but instead surrendering everything to God. As you put him first, be who He made you, and then live the way He calls you to through complete surrender, many of the obstacles you currently face may go away. When you give up the need to do things your way and instead surrender all to God, it is like rolling into the perfect ball that can go where God leads.

Here are some important questions for the week to answer and keep in front of you:

  1. When was the last time you thought about who God made you to be?

  2. How well are you being that person?

  3. What do you need to surrender to God to have peace in your life?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I am always trying to control things and doing what I think should be done. Help me surrender everything to you and be who you made me to be, then live as you direct. I don't want to be the God of my life; I want you to be! Lead me, Lord, I will follow. Amen
